چکیده

The cytoplasm is a very crowded environment harboring most of the metabolic reactions necessary for cellular function. Its biophysical properties are influenced by metabolism. Indeed, changes in mechanical have been linked to differentiation and concentration cell death. However, reverse relationship has not extensively studied. Here we tried address effects on cytoskeleton dynamics. Our results demonstrate sensitivity dynamics, specifically concentration. In fission yeast, changing cytoplasmic density reversibly affects dynamic processes such as actin microtubule We found that inversely correlated density. Increasing slowed down growth shrinkage rates dose-dependent manner. This effect dynamics did depend stress pathway. extended our observation plants confirmed suggesting probing an inherent property cytoplasm. discovered can be alleviated diluting he increase set out explore vitro growing buffers various viscosity obtained supporting evidence. highlight how important metabolism eukaryotes suggest limits fast happen cells. study reveals interplay between biology physics happening assay first step understanding affect biological it encloses.

The Cytoskeleton In Vivo

As a student I always marvelled at the sight of single cells in culture moving over artifi cial surfaces and exhibiting membrane ruffl es and protrusions. However, while I found cultured cells fascinating I always wondered how cells are able to move and regulate their shape in the context of a whole organism where so many space constraints exist and where all cellular processes have to be tight...

Estimating the biophysical properties of neurons with intracellular calcium dynamics.

We investigate the dynamics of a conductance-based neuron model coupled to a model of intracellular calcium uptake and release by the endoplasmic reticulum. The intracellular calcium dynamics occur on a time scale that is orders of magnitude slower than voltage spiking behavior. Coupling these mechanisms sets the stage for the appearance of chaotic dynamics, which we observe within certain rang...

Cytoskeleton dynamics

Four of six talks in the Cytoskeleton Dynamics Minisymposium described work on filament end-binding proteins: a reflection of the central role they play in cytoskeletal organization. Scott Hansen's single-molecule study of purified vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP) demonstrated that it is a weakly processive actin polymerase that is targeted to filament ends by actin monomers. Hansen...

Cytoskeleton dynamics in axon regeneration

Recent years have seen cytoskeleton dynamics emerging as a key player in axon regeneration. The cytoskeleton, in particular microtubules and actin, ensures the growth of neuronal processes and maintains the singular, highly polarized shape of neurons. Following injury, adult central axons are tipped by a dystrophic structure, the retraction bulb, which prevents their regeneration. Abnormal cyto...

Exploring cardiac biophysical properties

The heart is subject to multiple sources of stress. To maintain its normal function, and successfully overcome these stresses, heart muscle is equipped with fine-tuned regulatory mechanisms. Some of these mechanisms are inherent within the myocardium itself and are known as intrinsic mechanisms. Over a century ago, Otto Frank and Ernest Starling described an intrinsic mechanism by which the hea...
